Considering teeth whitening? Discover how professional whitening treatments differ from over-the-counter products, what kind of results are realistic, and how to keep your smile bright once treatment is done.
At Southeastern Dental Care, whitening is one of the most requested treatments we offer — and one of the most misunderstood. In this article, Dr. Bui explains what professional whitening actually does, who it works best for, and why supervised treatment produces better and safer results than a drugstore kit.
1. Why Teeth Discolor in the First Place
Staining falls into two categories. Extrinsic stains sit on the enamel surface and come from coffee, tea, red wine, cola, and tobacco. Intrinsic discoloration lies deeper in the tooth and can result from aging, certain medications, trauma, or excess fluoride during development. Whitening is highly effective on extrinsic staining and can improve some intrinsic discoloration, which is why an exam beforehand matters — it tells us what is realistically achievable for your teeth.
2. Professional Whitening vs. Over-the-Counter Kits
Store-bought strips and gels use much lower concentrations of whitening agent, and their one-size trays leak product onto the gums, which is the usual cause of the irritation people report. Professional whitening uses stronger, precisely applied agents with your gums protected, and custom trays for at-home systems that hold the gel exactly against the teeth. The result is a more even, more noticeable change in far less time.
3. What to Expect During Treatment
We start with an exam and a cleaning, since whitening works best on a plaque-free surface and we want to rule out decay or gum problems first. From there you may whiten in-office, where results are visible the same day, or with a custom take-home kit worn for a set period each day over about two weeks. Some patients combine the two — an in-office session to establish the shade, then trays to maintain it.
4. Managing Sensitivity
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect and it usually resolves within a day or two. We reduce it by tailoring the concentration and wear time to your teeth, and we may recommend a desensitizing toothpaste before and during treatment. This is a real advantage of supervised whitening: if your teeth respond strongly, we adjust the protocol rather than leaving you to push through it.
5. Making Your Results Last
Whitening is not permanent, but good habits extend it considerably. Rinsing with water after coffee, tea, or wine, using a straw for iced drinks, brushing twice daily, and keeping up regular cleanings all help. Most patients maintain their results for one to three years, and occasional touch-ups with your custom trays keep the shade consistent. Note that whitening agents do not change the color of crowns, veneers, or fillings, so if you have restorations in front we’ll plan the shade around them.
The Bottom Line
Professional whitening delivers faster, more even, and more predictable results than over-the-counter products, with far better control over sensitivity. Starting with an exam ensures the treatment suits your teeth and that your expectations match what whitening can realistically achieve.
